Canada Commits $20 Million Annual Grant to Cambodia

Phnom Penh: In a move reaffirming its commitment to fostering international cooperation, Canada has announced its pledge to continue providing Cambodia with a generous annual grant of $20 million. This announcement was made by Canada's Ambassador, Ms. Ping M. Kitnikone, during her meeting with the President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, Khuon Sudary, on Monday morning at the National Assembly of Cambodia.

During the meeting, Ambassador Kitnikone emphasized the enduring friendship between the two nations and underscored Canada's unwavering support for Cambodia's development efforts. She highlighted the significance of this assistance, stating that despite Cambodia's progress towards emerging from poverty, Canada remains dedicated to aiding in areas where assistance is needed.

President Khuon Sudary echoed Ambassador Kitnikone's sentiments, expressing gratitude for Canada's longstanding support, which has been instrumental in Cambodia's economic growth. She also voiced Cambodia's support for Canada's ongoing negotiations with ASEAN on a free trade agreement, emphasizing the mutual benefits of strengthened economic ties.

Canada's relationship with Cambodia dates back several decades, rooted in shared history and mutual cooperation. From participating in the International Control Commission during the Indochina conflict, and also contributing to the Paris Peace Accords of 1991, Canada has played a significant role in Cambodia's journey towards peace and prosperity.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has flourished, with merchandise trade reaching $2.4 billion in 2022, according to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Cambodia has emerged as one of Canada's top export destinations, further cementing the economic partnership between the two nations.

As Canada reaffirms its commitment to supporting Cambodia's development goals, the future looks promising for continued collaboration and mutual prosperity between these two nations.
